Leadership is a verb, not a noun. Leadership is action, not a position. Leadership is defined by what we do, not the role we are in. Some people in “leadership roles” are excellent leaders. But too many are bosses, “snoopervisors,” technocrats, bureaucrats, managers, commanders, chiefs, and the like. Conversely, many people who have no formal leadership role are excellent leaders. In today’s fast changing world, we all need to be leaders.

To lead is to show the way by going in advance. To lead is to guide or direct a course of action. To lead is to influence the behavior or opinion of others. We all need to be leaders, regardless of our formal title or role. This starts with inner self-leadership and moves outward to influence, guide, support, and lead others. The process of becoming a leader is the same as the process of becoming a highly effective human being. Leadership development is personal development. Leadership ultimately shows itself in what we do “out there.” But it starts “in here.”

It would be easy if we could all become leaders by following a simple set of steps. But the journey of personal growth means finding our own way. There are, however, critical areas of personal development based on timeless principles. The distance we need to grow along each leadership dimension will differ for each of us, but defining and continually growing along each of these paths is the way of the leader.

Wouldn’t it be nice to make a bundle of money quickly, with very little effort, working on your computer at home? You know it Would Be! Four Surefire Ways to Price Your Decorative Painting Jobs

Imagine this nightmare scenario

Youve spent considerable time and energy putting together what you consider to be a fair proposal for a decorative painting job that you really want to land. Youre finally sitting in front of your client revealing each intricate detail of the finish that you want to create on their walls.

Your client seems excited and eager to get started. At last, you reveal the total estimated cost of the project. Your client is speechless and just gasps at you in wide-eyed astonishment muttering that this is a lot more than shed hoped.

Are you left scratching your head wondering where you lost your client in your sales pitch? Its simple. You didnt get a feel for your clients budget during your initial consultation.

Most clients wont reveal their budget to you even if you ask them because they always want to get a lower price. So ultimately you need to know a couple different ways of discovering out how much money your client is willing to spend.

The first way is to come prepared with a sample price list of all the wall finishes you do. This is not a price list, per se, but a general list that breaks down the starting rate for a basic room that measures 12 x 12 feet with 8 foot ceilings.

So for instance, lets say your starting rate for a colorwash finish on a basic room size of 12 x 12 x 8 is 500. You show your client this price on your list and tell them that this is your starting rate and that you still need to factor in windows, doors, actual measurements of the room. By doing this your client will have some indication of your prices when you do come up with your actual bid amount.

The second way to gauge your clients budget is by using your samples. After youve been decorative painting for awhile youll have a good idea how long each finish takes you to accomplish from planning to completion. So if you take the total cost of the finish (including materials and labor costs) and divide by the square footage of the room youll come up with an average cost per square foot. Take this amount and write it on the back of the sample of this finish in black marker.

As youre reviewing your samples with the client you can either casually point out the cost per square foot or let them see it as theyre flipping the pieces over. You can guarantee theyll be sitting there doing some quick calculations in their head as theyre looking at the square footage cost for each finish.

If youre worried about whether your bid is too high which is causing your client to now flinch at the price, there are a couple of things you can do to prepare yourself to bid fairly.

First, do your homework in regard to the going hourly or square footage rate in your area. Call around to some other faux finishers or decorative painters to find out what theyre charging. When youre speaking to them pretend youre a buyer and ask for their basic rates. Now youre armed with comparative prices.

Should you bid high or low on a project? Ive always gone by the rule that if there are a lot of obstacles that will be a nuisance such as high ceilings, lots of windows, children or pets thatll be running around, or if the client will be difficult to work with, that I can justifiably charge more for the contract.

Sometimes, when youre first starting out and youre really hungry for the job you may find yourself bidding low just to land the contract. On the other hand just make sure that youre not bidding so low that youre working for minimum wage.

Also, when contractors bid low they skew the value of the work within the market unfairly for other decorative painters, which is unfair to the industry as a whole. Remember what they say: if you get all your bids, you probably are not charging enough.

As you can see, theres a lot to consider when you price out a painting job. But with a little preparation you can win more painting contracts and prepare your client for your proposal.

Formal Recognition Ceremony Has Its Place

Electronic medical records promise to make the future of healthcare brighter for patients and medical providers, yet across the board, its estimated only 10 to 15 percent of doctors even use them. If the promises of EMRs are so grand, why dont more healthcare professionals take advantage? While there are many reasons doctors have slowly adopted EMR technology, the top three are cost, data security and lack of uniform standards. This article will discuss these top objections to EMR implementation.

EMR Costs

Implementing an electronic medical record system can entail a significant upfront cost, especially if converting to a paperless medical office the first time. Its not surprising then the segment of doctors most resistant to electronic medical records are those with the smallest amount of income. Large practices, hospitals and insurance companies are adopting EMRs at twice the rate of small doctors since they realize the financial benefits and have the resources for fast implementation.

While there is a cost to EMR implementation, the financial benefits alone provide a strong return on investment even to the smallest practices. An article posted in the April, 2003 American Journal of Medicine examined the return on investment of EMRs for small practices and concluded the gains in productivity and decrease in denied or lost claims could gain an average practice 86,400 in a five year span. EMR Security

Securing patient medical records is another big reason doctors are slow to convert to paperless medical offices. Many EMRs currently available utilize clientserver technologymeaning that software is permanently installed on a server located in the doctors office and accessed through the network. This type of software clearly places the responsibility of backups and patient records security on the medical office. Web-based EMRs shift that responsibility away from the doctor and onto the software company who
are better equipped to secure electronic patient records. Though vigilant hackers can break into just about any system, web-based EMRs reduce that risk significantly.

EMR Standardization

Perhaps the biggest complication to widespread use of electronic medical records is the lack of standardization. One of the catalysts to the creation of EMRs is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Commonly known as HIPAA, this law promulgated the creation of electronic patient records, but failed to implement standards for them. To be fair, technology has changed quite a bit since 1996 and Congress doesnt own a crystal ball. Even Yahoos website looked quite a bit different ten years ago.

There is no real explanation why the components of modern electronic medical records havent been standardized. In fact, the name hasnt even been settled on!
